Morella
Morella is a boutique winery located in the Manduria region of Puglia, Italy, renowned for its dedication to producing high-quality wines from the native Primitivo grape. Founded by Australian winemaker Lisa Gilbee and her Italian husband Gaetano Morella in the early 2000s, the winery has quickly gained a reputation for crafting exceptional wines that express the unique terroir of Puglia, while embracing organic and biodynamic farming practices.
Situated in the heart of Primitivo di Manduria, Morella focuses on old-vine Primitivo, with many of their vineyards consisting of bush-trained vines that are over 50 to 100 years old. These low-yielding, ancient vines are planted on limestone-rich soils, which contribute to the concentration and complexity of the grapes. The combination of the region’s warm Mediterranean climate and these old vines allows Morella to produce wines that are powerful yet balanced, with a deep sense of place.
Lisa Gilbee’s approach to winemaking is both hands-on and minimal intervention. The vineyards are certified organic, and biodynamic principles are followed to enhance soil health and biodiversity. No synthetic chemicals are used, and the grapes are harvested by hand to ensure optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts and undergo minimal manipulation, allowing the natural flavors and characteristics of the grapes to shine through. Oak aging is used sparingly, with the goal of preserving the purity of the fruit.
Morella’s flagship wine is the Primitivo Old Vines, a bold and expressive wine that showcases the intensity and depth of the ancient Primitivo vines. It is known for its rich, dark fruit flavors, such as blackberry and plum, along with spicy notes of licorice, tobacco, and black pepper. Despite its concentration, the wine maintains a balance of acidity and fine tannins, making it both approachable in its youth and capable of aging.
Morella’s wines are highly regarded both in Italy and internationally, praised for their authenticity, character, and respect for tradition. The winery’s commitment to organic and biodynamic farming, combined with Lisa Gilbee’s skill as a winemaker, has helped put Puglia on the map as a source of world-class wines. Through their dedication to preserving the ancient Primitivo vines and crafting wines that truly represent the terroir of Manduria, Morella has become a benchmark for quality in southern Italy.
Today, Morella continues to push the boundaries of what is possible with Primitivo, producing wines that are a true reflection of the land and the people who work it. The winery’s focus on sustainability, tradition, and innovation has made it a leader in Puglia’s wine scene, with a growing reputation for excellence.
